Holbein

About the company

Holbein is a Japanese Company, headquartered in Osaka. It is family owned. The name Holbein came from European artist Hans Holbein. Holbein has been a leader in producing many fine art materials. Their gouache is perhaps the finest in the world, and their watercolors are outstanding. While most Holbein products are imported to the USA, the colored pencils have not been, and we have heard that  it is because they have not been through the safety tests required by US law to sell here.

Most art companies make student lines as well as artist lines in order to expand their market. This can cause confusion, since some people pick up the student brand of, for example, Caran d'Ache or Faber-Castell and think that the product is not that good. Holbein is rather unique in that they do not produce student grade art materials at all. They only produce materials professional grade supplies.

Artist Colored Pencils

  • Artist quality traditional colored pencils
  • 150 colors
  • Sets; difficult to find in USA
  • Pencils are pre-sharpened
  • Sets come arranged in color order
  • Thick Cores
  • Rich, intense colors
  • Soybean oil base
  • Very Expensive
  • Cannot replace individual colors in USA
  • Made in Japan

Holbeins are very rich in color, and go down wonderfully well.  They layer really well. Their large sets have some unique pastel colors.

We have been asking both Holbein and Dick Blick to please import these for all of us...with your voice added perhaps we can make that happen! If they are available here at a reasonable price and open stock, it would be a big plus for all colored pencil artists.
